Speaker B:

And today I have a really a new friend of mine and his name is Donovan Campbell.

Speaker B:

Donovan, welcome to the show.

Speaker C:

Hey Jim, thanks for having me on your program.

Speaker C:

I'm happy to be here, you know, just to to have a good vibes with you and hope from the good vibes the audience will be enjoying the vibes and be blessed from it too.

Speaker B:

Absolutely.

Speaker B:

So why don't you take 60 to 90 seconds and just let people know what you do.

Speaker C:

Okay.

Speaker C:

So I am a songwriter, I am a gospel music artist, I'm a songwriting educate, I am an author, I am motivational speaker, I am a creativity and a life coach.

Speaker B:

Awesome.

Speaker B:

How did you get into some of that?

Speaker B:

So you have such a wide array of.

Speaker B:

I'm a songwriter, I'm doing, you know, I help people write songs and do songs and you're a gospel singer.

Speaker B:

And I.

Speaker B:

So I can understand the.

Speaker B:

Where the natural thing of the motivational speaker and author comes in.

Speaker B:

But then there's the life coach.

Speaker B:

How did you get into all of this?

Speaker B:

This isn't fascinating.

Speaker C:

Yeah, that's a very good question.

Speaker C:

It is so amazing because I discovered that my natural talent because I believe that everyone is born with a natural talent.

Speaker C:

So person need to identify that natural talent.

Speaker C:

Yes, I do believe people have more than one gifts, but just that natural one.

Speaker C:

Identify that natural one and master that natural one.

Speaker C:

And from.

Speaker C:

of writing because this year:

Speaker C:

So imagine right Now I have 25 years worth of music I've never recorded because the inspiration comes so natural to me and writing because that's my natural talent that easily I Can flow day and night flow in writing.

Speaker B:

So how did you.

Speaker B:

Let me jump in here for a second because how did you discover that?

Speaker B:

Was the natural talent something you're born with?

Speaker B:

How did you discover that?

Speaker C:

y, I think I discovered about:

Speaker C:

And the reason why I said that.

Speaker C:

2021 going to.

Speaker C:

Yeah,:

Speaker C:

I first published this book with me and my wife.

Speaker C:

Both of us co author this book called Our Life's Journey.

Speaker C:

It's available on Amazon.

Speaker C:

So from writing song, I realized because I have that natural writing gift, it was easy for me to become an author.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker C:

Of the book.

Speaker C:

And from there,:

Speaker C:

Because music is something that is natural, because that's where the writing start for me.

Speaker C:

ic book here and I publish it:

Speaker C:

So back to back, I publish.

Speaker B:

So just for a second, for those of you who are listening and not watching the video, you're listening on, you know, whatever podcast, your Apple, Spotify, I, whatever.

Speaker B:

The name of that book was 22 years of music.

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker B:

Is that what the name of the book?

Speaker B:

22 years writing music.

Speaker B:

So for you guys.

Speaker B:

And all of that will be in the show notes for the books.

Speaker B:

So I want to make sure that you have that.

Speaker B:

But yeah, go ahead, continue your story.

Speaker B:

I just wanted to make sure we took a second because not everybody's going to be on the video.

Speaker B:

So we want to make sure we hear the audio.

Speaker C:

That's true.

Speaker C:

That is true.

Speaker C:

Thanks.

Speaker C:

Thanks for that reminder too.

Speaker C:

And all of these books, they are available on Amazon.

Speaker C:

So from songwriting to become a recording artist, to become an author.

Speaker C:

And currently, as I'm talking to you, I'm in the process of.

Speaker C:

Of getting my second music book together to release for next month, February, which is just few days away from now.

Speaker B:

Nice.

Speaker C:

So as I said before, there is a natural talent.

Speaker C:

Identify that natural talent, develop it, grow it, and be a master of that natural talent.

Speaker C:

The same mindset, the same discipline, the same diligent that you put towards that natural talent, put it towards other talent, and master it too.

Speaker B:

Right?

Speaker B:

So.

Speaker B:

So let's go back for a second.

Speaker B:

As you're going into this.

Speaker B:

I want to go back to like, Kid Donovan.

Speaker B:

Yeah, because, like, because it's fascinating and I can see the connection.

Speaker B:

You know, you're doing writing music, so you wrote a book.

Speaker B:

That's a great connection.

Speaker B:

I want to go back to Kid Donovan when he's writing his first song.

Speaker B:

Like, I want to hear.

Speaker B:

I want to hear the process that said that, that Got you to say, hey, I want to write songs that took you on a 22 year journey.

Speaker B:

What was Kid Donovan thinking at the time?

Speaker C:

He acts a very key question right to the true Jim, you have a very key question.

Speaker C:

To be honest with you, how do I get into the songwriting process?

Speaker C:

To be honest with you, when I was going to high school, just become a young believer, a young Christian in the faith.

Speaker C:

I mean, when I wasn't a Christian.

Speaker C:

I love the girls.

Speaker C:

I love to tell the girls, them the words.

Speaker C:

I know how to use the tactics.

Speaker C:

And to be honest with you, when at age 14, 15, somewhere there I realized that I can't do the things that I used to do anymore.

Speaker C:

So the temptations was heavy coming my way because my classmates tempting me, they want to sit in my lap and to see if I'm alive, you know, to see if anything rising and all of these things.

Speaker C:

And I can't tell the girls or the male, you know, my classmates words that I really want to tell them.

Speaker C:

So I find a way of expressing myself to God on paper.

Speaker C:

So when I start, I didn't know, I didn't know how to write a verse, I didn't know how to write a chorus.

Speaker C:

As I keep on go and learn from different classmates who they write songs and so forth, I develop and I have grown and understand how to put a song together and know the different songwriting structures.

Speaker C:

So that's all country started for me.

Speaker B:

So was there ever a point I love so first and foremost, I love the transition.

Speaker B:

I mean, you're like, you're speaking words and trying to get girlfriends and stuff like that and suddenly you're like, I can't do this anymore.

Speaker B:

It becomes music.

Speaker B:

That's a great transition.

Speaker B:

And so in your journey towards becoming a songwriter, a gospel singer, did you ever want to quit?

Speaker C:

Ah, another good question.

Speaker C:

To be honest with you, I'm a person who loves to stay in the back and to cheer person on like you.

Speaker C:

Jim, you're doing awesome.

Speaker C:

Go ahead, go ahead, have the talent.

Speaker C:

I know, I know you can because I saw you did something last week and I was, I love what you.

Speaker C:

I was always be the burner cheer the back burner cheer person.

Speaker C:

I guess, I guess by being in the backstage and see the different talents and the abilities and having those experience and apply those things, you know, the lessons and the blessings and apply to my life, that's what helps me to be who am I right now.

Speaker B:

So I want to go deeper in this because what you're talking about is definitely another line of questioning is how do you transition from the back seat to the front seat?

Speaker B:

But we'll get to that in a second because I want.

Speaker B:

I don't want to gloss over the question because I think in a lot of Christianity what happens is we say bless God and we don't actually talk about our feelings of frustration, our feelings of quitting when.

Speaker B:

When trouble comes and we're like, that's it, I'm packing my bags.

Speaker B:

Tell me a time like that in your life when you were like, that's it, I'm done.

Speaker B:

I'm frustrated.

Speaker B:

And you know, how did you get through that?

Speaker B:

What were some of the things you got through did to get through that?

Speaker C:

Another good question.

Speaker C:

Thanks for that question.

Speaker C:

To be honest with you, there was a.

Speaker C:

There's a stage in my life where I felt that based on the pressure of that I was going through and certain unhealthy living environments and to lifestyle, even though going to church and so forth, I felt that the best way for me, in order for me not to give up on God or to backslide, as some person may say, and go back into the world and do the things I was praying that God should escape my life.

Speaker C:

And yeah, I'll see what was praying.

Speaker C:

God just make taking a taxi or a bus, going to work and let the vehicle crash.

Speaker C:

And I'm the only person died in it.

Speaker C:

Everybody else live on.

Speaker C:

Honestly, I'm keeping it real.

Speaker C:

I was praying that prayer.

Speaker C:

And where I was living at the time, I was living with my grandma and one of my cousins and my cousin that was living with.

Speaker C:

He knows all the gunmen him involving some things, put it this way.

Speaker C:

And if he is not involved, these gunmen admire him and see him as an idol.

Speaker C:

So one of his friends came to our house and he said, hi Donovan, because he know me as a Christian and so forth.

Speaker C:

Because you know, when you are a Christian, you don't do certain things or say certain things and you don't drink and so forth.

Speaker C:

I don't smoke.

Speaker C:

So this guy who I know in involving stuff I don't see but the way how he talk, you know, he always talk about this person if you get gunshot and so forth.

Speaker C:

So anyway, he came to the house one day and he said to me that meanwhile is making a ganja.

Speaker C:

You know, they call it can be something here in Canada.

Speaker C:

Pretty word still ganja, you know, our weed.

Speaker C:

So he was making stuff and he have something already behind his ears.

Speaker C:

So he was making another one.

Speaker C:

And he said, hey Donovan.

Speaker C:

And I said, hi, you're still in the church.

Speaker C:

And I said, yes, I'm still in the church.

Speaker C:

He said, that's the best place to be him.

Speaker C:

And to be honest with you, the mindset that I was in, I was like, who is you telling me to stay in church?

Speaker C:

And all of these things?

Speaker C:

And to be honest with you, I can't recall saying thank you.

Speaker C:

I can't recall say, you need to come to church too, because I was in a prior suicidal mindset, right?

Speaker C:

I know not taking my life, but I'm praying God, make an accident happen, my troubles and all of these things will be over.

Speaker C:

And at least my cousins and my other family members and friends can say, you know, he's a Christian and you know, they will speak beautiful of me and what God was preparing me for such a time as no.

Speaker C:

And to be honest with you, man, this is very emotional, man.

Speaker C:

I'm trying not to cry.

Speaker C:

Try not to cry.

Speaker C:

To be honest with you, that guy who said those words of encouragement few days after, he got about seven or eight gunshots and it's not alive for me.

Speaker C:

Get those gunshots.

Speaker B:

Oh, wow, wow.

Speaker C:

And I not cry.

Speaker C:

It's pretty.

Speaker C:

I wept night and days, said, okay, God, all right, full control.

Speaker B:

Wow.

Speaker B:

So thank you for sharing that.

Speaker B:

That's a powerful story.

Speaker B:

So you went from like the suicidal mindset.

Speaker B:

A guy who rolling drugs comes in, says, stay in church.

Speaker B:

You know, which is which.

Speaker B:

A lot of us who have been in church is code for keep following Jesus and then he dies.

Speaker B:

That's what did that do mentally?

Speaker B:

Did that scare you?

Speaker B:

Did that.

Speaker B:

What is that?

Speaker B:

What were you thinking at the time?

Speaker B:

Like, when that.

Speaker B:

When you heard that happen?

Speaker C:

When I heard that happen, it grieves me a lot.

Speaker C:

Grieves me a lot.

Speaker C:

Because I said before, I didn't.

Speaker C:

I can't recall say thank you.

Speaker C:

I can't recall encouraging him.

Speaker C:

And here am I, a Christian, a believer in God, who's supposed to telling this person to go to church and believe in God too.

Speaker C:

And here's this person making a ganja while having something already behind his ears, right?

Speaker C:

Encouraging me as a Christian who was so low in spirit, low in my mindset, right?

Speaker C:

And that speak high volume for me because, I mean, I don't want to go too much into it, but before, before David become a king to lead people, he went, God, make him go through the process to become a shepherd, to lead animals.

Speaker C:

And sometimes, or should I say most of the times, we as human being, we don't want to go through the process, right?

Speaker B:

We don't we don't like pain.

Speaker B:

We don't want process.

Speaker B:

We want just the pres.

Speaker B:

The pleasure and the results.

Speaker B:

Man.

Speaker B:

That so that.

Speaker B:

So first and foremost, let me tell you this to the listeners.

Speaker B:

And if you're a believer or not a believer, you know, that's your prerogative.

Speaker B:

Obviously, being a believer.

Speaker B:

We want you all to follow Jesus Christ.

Speaker B:

But there's one important thing to understand is that encouragement comes from anywhere.

Speaker B:

And if you're struggling in a place where your mental health is a place of struggle, reach out to people.

Speaker B:

You can dial 988 for the suicide hotline or reach out to your professional or a good friend.

Speaker B:

Don't struggle alone and let encouragement come from any.

Speaker B:

Anywhere.

Speaker B:

And then ultimately, we'd love to.

Speaker B:

For you to, you know, become a Christian, accept Jesus Christ and be able to, you know, give your life over and find transfer, transformation, and healing.

Speaker B:

So I wanted to take a second and do that.

Speaker B:

And then.

Speaker B:

Donovan, thank you for the.

Speaker B:

For going down the pathway of the stories there.

Speaker B:

Let's shift gears a little bit here because.

Speaker B:

Because I can see this is something that really has inspired you.

Speaker B:

I'm sure, like now you're doing conferences and life coaching and, you know, a lesson from the past is now something you focus on.

Speaker B:

But before I do, we go into that side, we.

Speaker B:

We had said behind the scenes to the front seat.

Speaker B:

And I want to hit this up because.

Speaker B:

Saying behind the scenes, but yet you're a musician.

Speaker B:

Musicians are not behind the scenes.

Speaker B:

They're all stage.

Speaker B:

I have been a speaker for 20 years.

Speaker B:

Nothing behind the scenes other than, you know, fixing the speeches and stuff.

Speaker B:

So when you say behind the scenes, like you were in the back seat cheering people on and then going to the front seat, what was that transition like?

Speaker B:

What did you struggle with going to be in the spotlight?

Speaker C:

I think that came from what I call it.

Speaker C:

No, it was from a heartbroken relationship that pushed me because.

Speaker C:

So I wrote a song for one of my church sisters, and that song was from a broken heart relationship.

Speaker C:

And from that song, so I wrote the song for her.

Speaker C:

I pay musician to.

Speaker C:

To put the instrument together.

Speaker C:

I.

Speaker C:

I pay for studio time, everything.

Speaker C:

I even get backup singers for the song.

Speaker C:

And my voice is not that song.

Speaker C:

So I do everything.

Speaker C:

And after the song was completed, record and all of that, the Holy Spirit used that to minister to me and.

Speaker C:

And it helps to heal me.

Speaker C:

from I take that step like in:

Speaker C:

No,:

Speaker C:

Somewhere there I've been, I start go to the recording studio and to record my own song.

Speaker C:

And that's what pushed me to front stage a gospel artist.

Speaker C:

And then from there I build my confidence that I being on the front stage become natural.

Speaker B:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

So what was the biggest struggle about being thrust into the, to the forefront on stage?

Speaker B:

What was your biggest struggle during.

Speaker C:

I think it is self doubt or self sabotage as some person may say.

Speaker C:

But I think it's self doubt, you know.

Speaker B:

Okay, so how did you deal with that?

Speaker C:

Are my belief or self limitation?

Speaker B:

Right.

Speaker C:

So I will see other persons and believe in other persons, but I didn't see myself.

Speaker C:

I didn't believe in myself in the, in, in, in, in what I have to take me there too.

Speaker C:

So I think his self belief or.

Speaker B:

Self limitation that's, that's powerful.

Speaker B:

So the recognition of that is powerful.

Speaker B:

So then what did you do to help yourself with that self doubt?

Speaker B:

Because a lot of my listeners deal with self doubt, perfectionism, imposter syndrome.

Speaker B:

And this is something that you say you're dealing with.

Speaker B:

How did you start navigating through that?

Speaker C:

What I have done is that I, I learned from other persons within the church the way how they display their talents, their gifts and you know, whether it be a pastor or a teacher or a singer or even you know, persons who play instruments, the same principle apply.

Speaker C:

They action it, they, they love it, they put it to work that inspire me and motivate me to be able.

Speaker C:

Can stay on front stage and yeah, I mean and what I've encouraged myself because I love to talk to myself positively day and night.

Speaker C:

The talents are the gifts that God has given to me.

Speaker C:

It is not for myself alone.

Speaker C:

It is supposed to use to bless other people and, and also one of the things that I keep on tell myself too is that my stories, not just story stories, is not for me alone.

Speaker C:

Is to help other people too.

Speaker B:

Just like I'm sharing.

Speaker C:

Just like I'm sharing on your program here.

Speaker C:

I know inspired and blessed by this conversation.

Speaker B:

Yeah, I love that.

Speaker B:

So now my curiosity is piqued because we're talking about self doubt and things like that.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

What would you consider has been one of your.

Speaker B:

It could be on stage speaking or singing or whatever.

Speaker B:

One of your greatest.

Speaker B:

I would use the word, almost use the words failures or mishaps or something like you were like man that was really bad.

Speaker B:

Like you got off stage.

Speaker B:

You're like that was really Bad.

Speaker B:

And how did you like mentally get through that?

Speaker C:

As I said before, I take approach, I would take it from this approach.

Speaker B:

Okay.

Speaker C:

Nobody is not best at doing something overnight.

Speaker C:

So I take it from this angle.

Speaker C:

Bad, good, best.

Speaker C:

And I can't even go to great four step.

Speaker C:

So for me, I start bad.

Speaker C:

And that's where I learned how can I become good, which would be the second step.

Speaker B:

And right.

Speaker C:

By learning from the bad and, and practice and put certain things in place, I reach at stage good.

Speaker C:

But still, even though I'm good, I still making some bad mistake.

Speaker C:

Okay.

Speaker C:

I need to move away from good because I want to be at the best.

Speaker C:

Okay.

Speaker C:

So I move from the good to the best and from the best to the great.

Speaker C:

And how long does it take you?

Speaker C:

Everything's a process.

Speaker C:

Everything.

Speaker B:

Yes, absolutely.

Speaker B:

So how long did that take you like to go from, you know, you said bad, good, best.

Speaker B:

And you also said something really good, which you said, no one starts good, you know, so no one's.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

So how long do you think it took you to go from considering yourself bad, adequate to good?

Speaker B:

What was what?

Speaker B:

How long you think about that?

Speaker B:

Years, Months, Three performances?

Speaker C:

I would say years because it's.

Speaker C:

As I said before, I was staying away, you know, shying away in the backstage and all of these things.

Speaker C:

So being on the front stage, based on my experience, it helped to motivate and inspire me.

Speaker C:

So it takes me years to be on the front stage and feel comfortable on the front stage and hone my spot on the front stage.

Speaker C:

So it takes years.

Speaker C:

And I.

Speaker C:

And it all started from me just being a gospel recording artist performing at different places, you know, whether outreach, event concerts, banquets, mean, you know, different type of crow, different type of setting.

Speaker C:

So that I use that as a channel to help me as being someone who can do a motivational speech and definitely be.

Speaker C:

Do a presentation, you know, with a virtually or in person, you know.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

So then here's the next step of that question.

Speaker B:

We are traditionally harder on ourselves than people are harder on us.

Speaker B:

So how did you deal with that?

Speaker C:

Ah, another good question.

Speaker C:

You're asking some real good question here.

Speaker C:

As I said before.

Speaker C:

Wow.

Speaker C:

You know, one of the things that inspired me, I hope this will answer you, answer your question.

Speaker C:

One of the things that inspire me is that the Bible story about Joseph being the dreamer and his father and his brothers, right.

Speaker C:

God gave him the dream, are giving him dreams, right.

Speaker C:

Of things to manifest in his life and family life.

Speaker C:

But he telling his father, his brothers, I guess he were seeking approval from Them as human being.

Speaker C:

And the thing is where I think this it helps me.

Speaker C:

I guess that's what happening to me and I see it happen to other people is that sometimes people want approval from other people.

Speaker C:

When is not other people gave them the dream is not other people gave them the talent, the gifts.

Speaker C:

It is from the Creator above.

Speaker C:

So is the creator gave you the dream, gave you the talent you have is approved right there still and done.

Speaker C:

So I think for me, I was just seeking approval from people who.

Speaker C:

They're not the one who gave me the gift.

Speaker B:

Right, yeah, yeah, you're seeking people's.

Speaker B:

So we've actually interesting enough, me and some of my friends were having this conversation, this very conversation.

Speaker B:

And what we decide what I.

Speaker B:

I had said this.

Speaker B:

I said we need to stop creating a reality based on other people's opinions.

Speaker B:

And so what you're saying goes right in line with that, because oftentimes the seeking of approval is we're looking for other people's opinions to make us feel good about our.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker B:

And so refocusing that on God.

Speaker B:

Love that, man.

Speaker B:

Love that.

Speaker B:

So as we start landing the plane for this episode, we're gonna go two places.

Speaker B:

We're gonna.

Speaker B:

We're gonna go with a wisdom bomb.

Speaker B:

And for you guys who are listening, that, you know, this part of the show, that's where I asked every guest, you know, portable truth that you can take and apply to your life today.

Speaker B:

And then the other thing is, we want to make sure that you know how to find Donovan, how to connect with them.

Speaker B:

So we're going to go these two places.

Speaker B:

So let's start.

Speaker B:

Donovan, what would you say to the audience, to the listener, who is a portable truth that they can take with them?

Speaker C:

Ah, I would say be the person first inside to become the person outward.

Speaker B:

That's good.

Speaker C:

Yeah.

Speaker C:

And the reason why I say that is that, you know, in the Bible, you know, the first thing that God told the first couple, be fruitful and multiply, Right.

Speaker C:

That means is telling them, make a decision, not a choice.

Speaker C:

Choice means you have.

Speaker C:

Option B is a decision to be fruitful and multiply.

Speaker C:

And that's why I said, be the person first inside, within your mindset, in your internal, to become the person outward.

Speaker C:

Because becoming the person outward is a reflection of you being the person inside.

Speaker C:

So be the person first to become the person.

Speaker B:

That's really good.

Speaker B:

So how do people connect with you?

Speaker C:

Okay, persons can find me and Facebook Coach Donovan D.C.

Speaker C:
